At the budget end you are usually getting 720p native resolution that accepts a 1080p signal, LED lamp life measured in tens of thousands of hours, and built-in speakers that are fine for cartoons and bad for anything else.
The single most important spec is not resolution — it is how dark you can make the room. A budget projector in a fully dark room looks impressive. The same projector at 7pm with the curtains open looks washed out and gray. If you cannot black out the space, spend more or buy a TV.
Where these genuinely shine is casual, occasional, big-screen viewing. A projector on a shelf pointed at a blank wall is a better Friday night than the same movie on a laptop, and it packs away in a drawer.
